Port of Santos breaks record for year-to-date movement

Container Movement at the Port of Santos in August Reaches 456.5 Thousand TEUs, Surpassing Last Year by 12%. The movement of containers at the Port of Santos in August reached 456.5 thousand TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), surpassing the result of the same month last year by 12%. The accumulated numbers for the year were also significant, reaching 3.3 million TEUs, 2.9% higher than the first eight months of 2021, marking the best record for the period.

The performance of containers and agribusiness cargoes boosted the overall numbers for the Port, leading it to set a new record for the accumulated volume for the year, with 110.1 million tons, an increase of 9.0% compared to the same period last year.

August Sees Surprising Growth

The growth recorded in August was surprising, totaling 14.6 million tons, an increase of 21.4% over August 2021, resulting in the best performance for the month.

For the year, shipments totaled 80.3 million tons, an increase of 11.1% compared to the same period in 2021. Discharges reached 29.8 million tons, growing by 3.6%.

In August, shipments totaled 10.6 million tons, a 31.0% increase over August 2021. Discharges reached 4.0 million tons, 1.6% more than the same month last year.

Highlights in Agribusiness Cargo in August

Among the agribusiness cargoes in August, highlights include soybeans with 782.7 thousand tons (+328.75%), corn with 2.3 million tons (+25.2%), sugar with 2.5 million tons (+24.1%), bulk meal with 831.2 thousand tons (+63.5%), and cellulose with 810.3 thousand tons (+68.7%).

Year-to-Date Highlights

For the accumulated year, notable shipments included cellulose with a significant movement of 5.4 million tons, an increase of 61.2%; corn with 6.4 million tons (+78.0%); soybeans with 23.8 million tons (+9.9%); bulk soybean meal with 6.2 million tons (+32.0%); and meats with 1.5 million tons (+31.8%). Among discharges, fertilizer stood out with 5.5 million tons (+13.1%).

The flow of ships in the first eight months of the year reached 3,454 vessels, 6.2% more than in the same period last year.

Liquid Bulk

Liquid bulk showed growth of 5.1% in August, reaching 1.6 million tons, reflecting increases in shipments of alcohol (39.2%), fuel oil (24.1%), and caustic soda (24.3%). For the accumulated year, this category reached 12.6 million tons, an increase of 3.7%, marking the best record for the period.

Solid Bulk

Solid bulk totaled 7.4 million tons in August, a growth of 34.6%. Corn, sugar, soybeans, soybean meal, cellulose, and fertilizers were the highlights. For the year-to-date through August, this segment totaled 56.8 million tons, an increase of 12.6%, marking the best record for the period.

Trade Flow

The accumulated participation of Santos in Brazil’s trade flow in August was 28.9%. Of the foreign trade transactions that passed through the Port of Santos, 30.9% had China as a partner country. São Paulo remains the state with the highest participation in foreign trade transactions through the Port (53.4%).
