Trends and Successes: The Brilliant Performance of Foreign Trade in Rio de Janeiro in 2023

The year 2023 marked a historic milestone for commerce in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Registering the largest trade flow since the beginning of the historical series in 2000, the state reached the impressive mark of US$72 billion, with record values ​​in both exports and imports, resulting in a positive trade balance of US$20 billion.

Rio de Janeiro maintained its position as the second largest player in national foreign trade, with a share of 12.4%, behind only São Paulo. This data was revealed by the Rio Exporta 2023 bulletin, prepared by Firjan Internacional, with information from the Foundation Center for Foreign Trade Studies (Funcex) and the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) of the federal government.

The state’s passenger car exports saw significant growth of 17%, reaching US$304 million, with emphasis on the Argentine market. Companies like Nissan contributed to this increase, consolidating its competitive position in the international market.

In the general overview of Rio de Janeiro’s exports, the United States continued to be Rio de Janeiro’s main trading partner, representing 39% of the state’s exports. Large companies such as Celma, Gerdau and Embraer established businesses in the USA, strengthening bilateral trade.

Furthermore, there was a significant increase in exports to Asia, particularly China, which registered an increase of 124%. In imports, the European Union stood out, with an increase of 19%, especially from France and Germany.

The oil and natural gas sector continued to be the flagship of Rio de Janeiro’s exports, representing 79% of the state’s total sales. There was also an increase in exports of machinery and equipment.

However, imports also saw a notable increase, especially of intermediate goods and transport equipment. In the crude oil trade, China remained the main buyer, while Guyana’s purchases increased significantly.

Regarding prices, there was a drop in the average price of a barrel of oil in 2023, but the quantities exported increased, showing an increase in production. The machinery and equipment sector also recorded significant growth.

In summary, the year 2023 was marked by an exceptional performance in foreign trade in the state of Rio de Janeiro, driven by several sectors, with emphasis on the automotive industry and the oil and gas sector.
